Blog #6- Ch 8 & 9

In chapter 8, it discusses how teachers and students use computers and other technologies to share ideas, facts, and knowledge in the classrooms and online. Teachers have a variety of choices of what  technologies to integrate into their lessons/curriculum. Some communication technologies teachers are using in classrooms are emails, teacher or classroom websites, blogs, online discussions, and wikis. Also, some teachers use social media like, Twitter, Facebook pages, and Instagram for educational purposes. There are five major ways of using electronic communications our classrooms; teaching interactively, sharing information, building learning communities, publishing student work, and energizing student writing. I think it's important to incorporate technology into our classrooms and lessons because it's a way for teachers to connect with their students. And it also promotes meaningful learning, and "extend academics beyond the confines of regular school time." Blogging is emerging as one of the most important ways for teachers and students to communicate it is even evident in our EDU 7266 class, we use it all the time in every class.
In chapter 9, it goes over multimedia technology and how teachers can use it effectively in classrooms. Teachers can get creative with their lessons and add visual information. In almost all classrooms now teachers are using power point as a tool to present their lessons. Teachers are also using videos and DVDs as a tool to convey important information to their students. When I was observing at a school the teacher would show short video clips in her lessons which explained the topic to their students but the students were more engaged because they were visually entertained, which I thought the video was an effective tool.

1. Why do you think blogging is more popular with girls than with boys?

2. What communication technologies, and multimedia would you use in your classroom, and why?

  1. Michelle, EDU 7266 has taught me how to blog and I enjoy doing it. I can see how blogging can turn into a large trend. I think blogging is more popular with girls than boys because it is similar to a journal. A blog allows people to express themselves digitally rather than on paper. The only other difference is that in a blog people can read and make comments. Boys do not like to express their feelings. As a teacher, a good way to improvise is by making the students reflect on a specific topic/question that the class can relate to, such as a lesson or chapter from a story, like we do in EDU 7266.

  2. Michelle, to answer for first question, I think blogging has a lot to do discussing with feelings and reactions to things. In our society boys are taught from a young age not to show these type of emotions. Girls on the other hand are encouraged to talk about their feelings and to express them selves.

  3. I am so curious about your first question. Blogs can be created for just about anything. Anything that can be written on a blogs. There are many blogs for just fun. I think girls prefer to collect photos or useful information related their daily life and post them on their blogs. I guess some communication technology tools like instant massaging are more popular with girls than with boys.

    Hey Michelle,

I would use the pocket video camera because I love assigning project based activities throughout the school year. I would have students use the video camera to actively record them roleplaying, conducting an experiment, personal reviews of books they are reading, and other important things that have been going on in their communities. I love the aspect of students learning how to edit things that they record, because it helps build their technological skills and learning how to edit videos takes a lot of patience and decision making skills. Students are challenged with presenting all that they have recorded in normally 4 to 5 min so its not a easy task. i would also use it to have mock interviews or reactions to our book of the month.

  5. Michelle,

To answer the first question i think blogging is more popular with girls than boys because blogs are usually about the person expressing their feelings about something or a way for a person to just get something off their chest. Within today's world boys are taught that it is a bad thing to show and express their emotions because its not a "manly" thing to do. Girls are taught that its okay to share and express their feelings among people so blogging would be a way of doing that.

  6. i believe blogging is more popular with girls compared to boys because girls from a relatively young age begin developing their cognitive skills much quicker than boys. they begin socializing, expressing feelings and sharing ideas. along that scope most girls seek feedback. boys on the other hand boys tend to keep emotions to themselves. they don't seek as much socializing as girls do could it be genetics and society (the way they are brought up) certainly! boys are more of the "show" rather than tell. have you ever heard that boys do better in science rather than literacy. i think that also plays a factor with blogging. boys may not have much of an interesting writing but may have more interest creating.
